“The “Folk Tape: The Ascension” has just about everything a good mixtape should. Verses from household names like Drake, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj and Jeezy; new school hit makers like Future, Big Krit, Curren$y and Big Sean; rap vets like Lil Boosie, Plies and Rocko, and some names you should get used to like B $tack$, Dusty Mcfly, Young Thug, and MOS. The production is also on point with soundscapes from Drumma Boy, T- Minus, Vinylz and Boi-1da, Pay Cash and Bink!. This one bangs. If you’re looking for super lyrical deep content you won’t find it here. What you will find is a tracklist built to make you bob your head until your neck hurts.
Although the big names on this mixtape don’t drop any new exclusives they don’t disappoint either. One of the mixtape’s major strengths lies in the diverse artistry presented by the lesser known names. On “Ain’t Shit” it’s Dusty Mcfly’s braggadocio rhymes that shine. B $tack$’ laid back style on full display on “New Money”. The Nicki Minaj assisted “Danny Glover” remix from Young Thug is arguably the biggest record on the project. MOS’ “Bentley” is a memorable ode to the fast life. Lacking cohesion or even a theme DJ Folk’s “The Folk Tape: The Ascension” isn’t a bad listen just not a great mixtape.
