(New Video)-@espn “Going Home”

The Fourth of July has always been a time of great celebration to me growing up. No school, cookouts, swimming and of course, fireworks. And now, being a father, I once again get to enjoy this festive holiday with my eight year old son, niece and nephew and rekindle those great memories all over. This holiday though, I’d like to take the time to dig deeper into the importance of July 4th. Not just to explain how lucky we are to be a democratically ran country, blessed with many freedoms other country can only dream of but to touch on our ever so brave military troops that risk their lives on a daily basis for those freedoms.

I myself had a good friend in high school, Lance Corporal Jesse De La Torre, pass away in combat performing a heroic act of valor. A lot more times than not, we take times such as today for granted without realizing that these very troops and their families are in constant turmoil, pondering the thought that they may never get the chance to see each other again. But these same families are some of the most optimistic and positive spirited people I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. With that being said, our owner, ShaH Evans, linked me a video this morning that had me at a loss for words with tears in my eyes.

The video was created by ESPN and featured on Sportcenter and is titled “Going Home”. In the video, we see the story of a father/husband in the military, and get a glimpse of what life’s like for their family as he is off serving active duty. You start to imagine the things running thru this soldier’s head as the times go on. Clips are then added in between the storyline of troops returning home to surprise their loved ones with Chris Daughtry’s “I’m Going Home” playing in the backround. It’s an overly emotional feeling I get seeing these clips.

We then see the soldier from our story deploying, driving inside a vehicle and heading home to his family. This video is a must watch and only helps reestablish the meaning to holidays such as 4th of July, Veteran’s Day & Memorial Day. Let’s take the time today to thank the extremely hard working men and women of our military and if any of us know of a family with loved ones currently active in the military, reach out and let them know just how thankful you are and not to worry because they will be coming home soon.
