Get Your Buzz Up had a chance to chop it up with 5ive Star and this is how it all went down:
What’s up 5ive Star? Been a minute since we last spoke, give us an idea of what your current focus is.
Hey what’s good. The 5ive Star team has been crazy busy over the past year. The mixtape “Get Ready” earned the feature spot on DatPiff. We have shot 5 videos and have the second mixtape called “I Am 5ive Star Mixtape ready for launch. Our focus is bringing 5ive Star to the world.
You were always an artist into lyrics whether it be Poetry or Hip Hop, what are the general differences and how have you used your words to stand out?
I feel lyrics are always the foundation to the art form. In making music or whatever lyrical art form, it’s about not only what you say but how you say it. Creativity is everything. I like to do it original, with concepts and at the end of the day just be me. While I have many influences, I always strive to make music that’s innovative and push the industry forward.
You dropped a classic product your last time around called ‘Get Ready’ and worked with one of the most sought after producer/ engineers in the game Ken Lewis, how did you guys link and what was that experience like?
Man, I tell you what…it was a pleasure to work with a great. He is so humble and grounded. I feel that this is a huge lesson to be learned. He really appreciates his position and treats your project as serious as any other. At least that’s how he makes you feel…(laughs). Ken and I met up through a common producer friend. It’s all good, Ken is good peoples and really brought the music to a new level.
Ok, lets talk about your latest offering ‘Nicki’, for those living under a rock, how would you explain the concept of the record?
Well, I heard this beat by a dope producer Kajmir Royale. Immediately it had me thinking of this concept. “Nicki” is about having a couple women after you. It’s not Nicki Minaj but they will definitely do. (laughs) It is definitely an homage to Nicki who is super fly to me and while I may not have Nicki, I got “Nicki”….you feel me. Jamee Ranta Productions and the director Wuz Good put the video together and killed the concept. Much love to them. We are getting mad love on that video.
Overall creatively what was your approach to the video and what do you want viewers to experience?
Well, we tried to capture the essence of Nicki Minaj in the styling and all of her “personalities.” It was just about creating that dope visual to complete the song. I wanted people to enter into the 5ive Star world and bring Nicki’s essence with us.
How do you think you have progressed as an artist over the last 5 years? How do you plan to enter the next 5?
As any artist, I’m just perfecting myself as an artist. I doing the best me right now. I always could put pen to paper but now it’s finding that perfect zone, that lane and brand to deliver the music properly. I study this culture, I live this music and I feel my time is here. You know me and I have always said, if I don’t win Grammy awards something went wrong. That’s just how I feel. I have something to prove.
Whats next on your agenda?
We are prepping the release of our next video called, “More” and we are set to release the new mixtape with the next video. The next video is another insane visual that I can’t wait to push. The mixtape is crazy, got 11 original songs on there and I’m looking forward to the new music dropping and people getting to know 5ive Star better. The album is complete as well called, “I Am 5ive Star.” That will follow the mixtape with the same name.
Where can we find you online?
We everywhere partner! The official website is www.5ivestarmusic.com. The facebook is www.facebook.com/5ivestar1. But really, just Google “5ive Star”….we will be there (laughs).
Any last shouts?
I have to shout out the whole 5ive Star One family. Much love to istandard for showing so much support over the years and I look forward to checking back with you Grammy night. (laughs)
