Originally put out as a loosie, Boston crooner Ballad’s remix of Drake’s “Hotline Bling”, which itself is a reworking of D.R.A.M.’s “Cha Cha”, has captured the ears of thousands and gone on to be hailed as an underground R&B smash.
Wanting to add more harmonies to the record after hearing it for the first time, Ballad and his slick vocals went to work on the Drake smash and once posted online it racked up the listens on Soundcloud until in typical Soundcloud fashion the record was taken down due to a copyright complaint. Topping out at 20,000 listens, Ballad has since uploaded the track via his Audiomack account and it’s currently sitting at 13,000 spins. Not bad for an independent singer, right?
Explaining his thought process behind the remix, Ballad said: “I was scrolling down my tumblr dash and I happened to come across Drake’s new ‘Hotline Bling’ record. I had heard the record before and I really enjoyed it. I clicked play and continued scrolling down my dash. As I’m singing along I couldn’t help but want to hear more harmonies so I decided to do my own take on the record.”
Ballad’s much anticipated “Suite ’89” EP is coming soon.
