Manny Miz is an artist, producer & radio show host on New York’s “Swag In The City” which airs on FloEmpireRadio.com. After releasing the first installment of his “Lifestyle Series” of mixtapes he had mapped out, the Brooklyn resident took a break from making music just about completely. However on May 27th, Manny jumped back on the scene with the second part of his mixtape series with “Lifestyle of a Dreamer” and an infectious lead single titled “On The Regular”. GYBU took quick notice of the single and project and reached out to Miz and today we are pleased to present our latest installment of our “Buzz’N” iNterview series alongside him. We’re going to visit on topics such as his current job titles, his hiatus from music and of course, “Lifestyle of a Dreamer” and get to know alot more about him in the interview.

Manny, we’re glad to have you with us today. We want to also welcome you back to the music world. Please tell us the basis behind your stage name and a little about yourself.

Thanks man, I really appreciate you taking out the time to interview an independent underground dude like myself. Well we can start off with my stage name. It was derived off of my actual name which is Manuel but my nickname is Manny. The Miz part, I honestly have no idea how I even came up with that! LBVS! I’m a random dude so I would assume that’s part of my randomness. My Mizzles adlib came from the Miz name. One day I was recording with my boy and told him jokingly my new addlib is “Mizzles” and during the session, he yelled it out and I was just like “Yo, that sounded kinda ill!” LOL

I was born in Brooklyn, New York- Williamsburg to be exact. I started playing the trumpet and reading music when I was 10. I Went to Laguardia HS Performing Arts as an art major but was always surrounded by music. I started taking it more serious about 3 years ago. I love it, still do and always will.

Besides making music, you also host the “Swag In The City” radio show that airs every Wednesday from 6-8pm (Eastern Time) on FloEmpireRadio.com. For those unfamiliar with the Flo Empire Radio and your show in general, what can one expect to hear when tuned into the broadcast? Also, how exactly did the show come about?

Well we don’t like to follow trends or be compared to other people so we didnt want this show to just only be a simple music radio show. We have all different kinds of topics and segments ranging from fashion, current problems going on, new music from major & independent artists and film. Basically any subject matter we feel like talking about. We always have new & interesting guests come on each week from industry professionals to unknown artists. My 2 co-hosts are Meek Jaffe and DJ Effex ( mainly Meek Jaffe). Both are raw and have no problem speaking their minds. We just like to give off the vibe that we like to have fun, yet are well educated.

The show actually has been in the works since last year when my homie Meek had her own show at DTFRadio and I would always come up and guest co-host. That show ended up not working out and I came quick to her with the idea. We then pitched it to her people and about 4 months ago, we finalized the show and its been “Swag And The City” ever since.

You devised a “Lifestyle Series” of mixtapes and dropped the first installment back in April 2012. One of the standout cuts from that project was “Lifestyle of a Dropout”, in which you released a video for. What’s the basis behind the overall concept of this series and could you speak some about the Dropout video a bit?

Oh yeah, definitely! LOL! I am a strong believer in keeping it real with your music. I feel that if you can’t be yourself and not be afraid to do so, people won’t mess with ya movement and you won’t last long in this industry. The “Lifestyle Series” basically describes my life at each point in time. At that time, I dropped out of school. Now, this time I’m dreaming of making it with this music. Hopefully next installment will be called “Lifestyle of the Almost Made It”, LOL! The “Lifestyle of a Dropout” song actually came about at one of my old jobs. I really hated it and would always be on my phone writing music. At that time, I had just dropped out of college to pursue music seriously.

That song was basically me just venting about life with a couple minor exaggerations lol and making a funny out of it . For example, I wasn’t returning cheese to supermarkets saying it smelled like dog nuts, lol. But you get the idea. Everything in that video was really my life at that point. I was struggling hard. I get a ticket in the video, that was real. My car mirror was hanging about to fall off. That was real, lol! I’d been driving around like that for months. Luckily for me that song right there was solid and made people take me seriously. I recieved plenty of shows, getting a very, very small taste of success.

After hearing “On The Regular”, I began researching you and came across a video from back in 2013. It’s for a track that also features an emcee by the name of Wes Ramos”. The video is named “One Train” and this is a release from the Mizzle Squad, who Wes happens to be a part of. This joint had my head nodding from the jump, LBVS! What exactly is the Mizzle Squad and can we expect some new music from the squad that will be comparable to “One Train”?

Basically Mizzle Squad is my home team. My two main producers (Yahrodee and Knowledge the Producer)  DJ Effex & myself. Wes & I at that particular point were making music together. He’s still my dude but right now, I have to focus on myself if I want things to really kick off. For the current time, you won’t hear music like that but in the future you never know man…

So you decided to take a serious break from the music scene after “Lifestyle of a Dreamer” and songs like “One Train”. If you feel comfortable speaking about it, what sparked the hiatus and what got you interested in picking the mic and keyboard back up now?

I had a show at Webstar Hall and the night prior, I went uptown to get my braids done. Can’t go to a show looking all fuzzy, LOL. And on my way back driving down the FDR, I caught a flat and had to pull over. While changing my tire, a car came flying out of nowhere. The hit my car and that sent me airborne and I’m a pretty big guy. I still hadn’t came to the realization until a few months later that I nearly died… If I hadn’t moved those 10 seconds earlier I may not be here and that kinda messed me up mentally. I kept it from alot of people. And to make matters worse, my back was all messed up. Therapy sessions were on my schedule for several months. I did do some shows but would get frustrated by standing so long with a bad back. On top of that, I started a new job that took up most of my time. So it was like I was being tested if I really wanted to pursue music. Music was always my love and one day I just had an epiphany. I was like this 9-5 shit ain’t for me, I need to do music. So we finished up this “Lifestyle of a Dreamer” project and dropped it.

Let’s get into your current state of affairs Mizzle. GYBU got wind of your lead off single the new mixtape, “Lifestyle of a Dreamer” and were sold since then, LOL! The song I’m talking about is “On The Regular” and the best way to describe it is to take Krayzie Bone and imagine if he had grown up in New York with a slower delivery. I pick this comparison up of course from your hooks and bridges mainly. How would you describe your music? I’ve also got to ask what “On The Regular” means too. I’ve got my assumptions but why not get a direct answer from the man responsible for such an addictive tune?

The concept behind “On the Regular” is basically to just  embrace your current lifestyle and make the best of it. Think positive and keep it moving and work for something. You’ll eventually be where you want to be. My approach to music is creating meaningful music but at the same time providing people with something they actually want. I feel if you can make catchy hooks and interesting music and beats then people will actually try to listen to the message you trying to convey. They’re already sold by the hook and the beat, even if it takes listening to it 5, 10 or 15 times, LOL!

You constructed “Lifestyle of a Dreamer” as a concept project, not just some mixtape with a bunch of random songs thrown together. It’s meant to be played from start to finish and even has some hilarious skits that are provided by the host of the mixtape, DJ Effex. Could you explain the concept to our viewers and speak a little about your relationship with DJ Effex?

You know like I said previously, I am a strong believer of putting your personality into your music. People don’t just want to understand your music, they want to understand you as an artist and brand as well. Dj Effex, that’s my bro right there, we grew up together. Yahrodee is also my bro from childhood , he came up with the idea for the interludes. We thought it’d be funny by putting real life voicemails that Knowledge would leave for me. I always like to tell a story but everyone who knows me personally knows I joke alot too. If you play the tape from the first track all the way to the last, you’ll get more of an understanding of me. I’m just trying to get by man. I’m living on the regular right now. I gotta 9-5 which I hate but it keeps me paid. I just got a dollar and a dream. I’m battling the politics of this music industry. Those are all titles describing my life right now.

I also understand you plan on releasing three videos to back the project in total. One for your current single “On The Regular” and then you plan to follow up with “Feel The Way” & “9 to 5”. Can you share with our readers out there what we can expect from these releases visually? Can’t wait to see the Regular video!

Pure honesty and positivity. I like to make feel good music but love to do more interesting videos. I got alot planned for these videos and am definitely excited for the “On the Regular” one. I’m actually shooting more videos to the project but these are the first main focuses. I don’t want to give away any goodies. Id rather everyone just see the videos when they come out and be surprised.

For anyone wanting to get in tune with you for updates, new music or shows, where can we find you at online?
