Chicago, Illinois hip hop trio Tunnel Movement consists of Kwote1, N.O.A.H & Decept who just released a solid boombap themed project titled, “OVERLOOKED”. The album bolsters features from the likes of Edo. G, Prime, Blaq Poet, MC Juice, and Mic One. The producers that provide the soundscape include Scriz, Anon, Orange Field, Kemp, Loost Beats, Kemp, Ugly Tony & Luka with cuts from Chinch33, DJ Grazzhoppa & DJ Nixon.

From the jump, listeners can quickly figure out what they are in store for: a journey thru raw, unadulterated hip hop. On “FNS”, the fellas flip clever linguistics over a soulful beat provided by Scriz which then rolls right into “Road Less Traveled”, a tale that incorporates a back and forth rhyme style reminiscent of nineties style hip hop. The sampling on cuts such as “Bean Buggin”, “Life Lessons” & “Kool Breeze” fits Tunnel Movement perfectly. Their cadence and voice carries over the beats quite nicely.

Blaq Poet hops on “Return of the Boombap” and one can envision venues such as Sub T and Jerry’s wildin out during a live performance. TM then slows things down on songs like “Gotta B Hawt”, “Honey” & “Bring It Back”; a ode to the days of old. That brings us to “What If”, a clever concept song using the line what if thru the verses and chorus. The album then rides out with features from Mic One “Livin It” and MC Juice “Eye Witness”.

All in all, there’s really no pitfalls to the project. I’d of liked to hear some more hard hitting records but with the content offered, I’m quite satisfied by the selection. Hailing from out of a city where gangbanging and drill music have become the norm, it’s a breath of fresh air to get a solid hip hop offering from Tunnel Movement. “OVERLOOK” will appeal to fans of soulful & boombap beats, nineties style hip hop and Chicago underground music.

The album is available via Tunnel Movement’s Bandcamp page for only $7.
