(Album Review)-@TrizzTaylor “Coming of Age”

If judged solely off of his musical talents, one would never guess that Morrisville, Pennsylvanian emcee Trizz Taylor was merely twenty-two years of age. His ability to reincarnate that “nineties” essence so spoken about by die hard hip hop fans is a true gift. Another amazing fact is that Trizz has only released two projects as to date. His debut mixtape “Awaited Arrival” was released back in October 2012 & his newly released project “Coming of Age”, which is the center of today’s topic. Tracking in at thirteen songs, it holds seldom guest features (Liz Simone & EPIK) with production from the likes of Flawless Tracks, EPIK, PS Beats, Jase Beats, Alex Lustig, Kountdown & S Dot Fire. In short, the album touches on the subject of a teenager’s transformation to a man during the current times of today. So with no further ado, let’s dive into Trizz Taylor’s “Coming of Age”.

Trizz kicks things off correctly with the intensely emotional “Intro”. In the song, we get a graphically detailed account of Trizz’ life, mindset & outlook. Taylor speaks of taking care of Ma Dukes, the choices that his high school friends made & the outcomes of them and maturing. Flawless Tracks does a wonderful job providing Taylor with the perfect story telling beat here. Next up is “Lyrical Ability”, which Trizz had released a short biopic film for prior to this album’s release. In the song, the young emcee describes “I decided to make money off of metaphors” and exercises his extreme word play. On the Liz Simone assisted anthem “Motivation”, Trizz gives inspiration thru his own perspectives of life and vows to go hard til he makes it. “I Don’t Have A Care” has a strong radio friendly vibe to it and a dope EPIK hook that strongly resembles & sounds like a Drake hook (think “Money To Blow”). “Success is my cologne/ I spray it on with a purpose & call me ice cream/ cause Im always after cake are just a few of the clever lines Taylor spits over the EPIK production.

This brings us to the part of the album that delivers the title track, “Coming of Age”. On this composition, we experience the transformation of a young Trizz to the man of now. His ability to give the song an anthem-like feeling thru the chorus is amazing. On the “California Dreams (Interlude)”, we get an opportunity to learn a little about Taylor’s backstory and is a perfect interlude to set up “Midnight in Murrieta”. This is the point where it feels Trizz’ eyes are opened up. After the “Coming of Age” joint, this song only emphasizes his transformation. “12:01” is a wonderfully clever title to follow up “Midnight in Murrieta”. It’s almost as if this is Trizz’ newly found mindset after his experience in California. These few songs were brilliantly put together onto the album.

On the back end of the project, we get a hilarious phone conversation between Taylor and a fellow homey’s past party antics on the “Pregamin (Skit)”. The skit leads us into the liquor drinking anthem “Pregamin”. Make sure to follow Trizz’ exact instructions at around 3:10 of the song. The album once again gets back to being serious on the heartfelt “Growing Pains” where Taylor speaks on incidents and events involving the likes of his pops & uncle. The title pretty much explains what to expect from the record: life experiences of growing up. On the eye opening “Suburban Misfit” Trizz’ tells the story that a lot of this generation experiences: moving from the hood to the suburbs and being “stuck” in the middle. There are seldom songs that address this subject such as Taylor has here. The closing track, “Until Next Time”, is another ideally titled song with a very dope hook and a shout out to fellow hometown representative Asher Roth. This song is an excellent way to end an outstanding album.

“Coming of Age” is an overall high quality album. From the arrangement of the songs, track titles, wordplay and production selections, Trizz doesn’t disappoint on his sophomore outing. The emcee not only makes Pennsylvania look great but also does hip hop a huge favor by delivering an album full of substance. Do yourself a favor and go download “Coming of Age” right now.
