What’s up DemeGod? Tell us about yourself and the Dangerous Musick movement.
What’s good? I’m an up-and-coming rap star, formerly known as the rap artist Dangerous, I was signed to North Star Music Group, owned by music’s icon Prince and power attorney Londell Mcmillan. The label fell through and so I decided to go independent. Growing up with family and friends in the industry shaped and molded me to who I am now. I’ve been a part of the New York underground hip hop scene, as well as working behind the scenes. I consider myself a lyricist—a true MC—and I bang on beats reppin’ my city 150% in this hip hop music game. Originally from Crown Heights, Brooklyn. BK all day and banging out of Mount Vernon, NY. I make music for everybody: the model, the stripper, the good girl, the college student, even the pimp, the pusher, dope boys and gangstas, the good tax paying citizen, to the average young teen from 14 years old to young adults 25 to 40 years old in America.
When and why did you first start rapping?
I started rapping at age 14. I was influences by family that was in the business, and just the whole rap fever had me from when I was first exposed. I was already writing poetry and expressing myself through the form of words. Rap music and being an artist was just another way for me to do that.
When did you know you were going to pursue it as a career?
Wow, I could say from the first day I took to the stage at 12 years old. I see it as just another way life prepped me for what I’m doing now. I officially made my decision in a New York state penitentiary. I haven’t been back since, so it was the best decision I could have made.
Who has influenced you most along the way?
I definitely would have to say Heavy D, CL Smooth and Pete Rock, Jungle Bro, Native Tongue, Guru (Gangstarr), Nas, B.I.G., 2Pac. Big, major influences.
Tell us a little about your background coming up in Mount Vernon, NY and how that’s affected your life and approach to music?
I moved from Brooklyn to Mount Vernon when I was 13 years old. The transition was work in progress, already being familiar with the rap music fad, Mount Vernon had a few successful artists at the time. I became friends with Heavy D, CL Smooth and Pete Rock, and super producer DJ Eddie F. Coming up watching them and being around gave me a lot of insight to how things behind the scenes worked. It gave me an opportunity most dream of. Its easy for me to apply to my life and music now.
What are the projects that you’re currently promoting?
Right now we are promoting the release of my mixtape album series, self entitled “DemeGod.” I got features by international hip hop artist Probz form Amsterdam. I got Pete Rock and CL Smooth, Kanye West, and Case. And then we pushing the single, entitled “No Food,” featuring Probz.
What makes you stand out from other independent hip hop artists?
My level of experience—my resume speaks for itself for an artist that’s never been signed to a major. I’ve been on multiple soundtracks as well as featured on a slew of songs with notable artists. That says a lot about my work ethic—I get it in every opportunity I get. I’m more than just and artist; I’m a hip hop activist, making a difference in my community. Being a humanitarian is my personal passion. My versatility is what a lot of artists lack and will never acquire. I focus on being able to jump on a track with Chris Brown and then turn around 180 and do a song with Waka Flocka.
What’s coming up next for DemeGod?
Building my fan base and brand. More mixtapes are going to be dropping. More videos, more promo tours and concerts, etc. Ultimately, I’m looking for a major label situation like distribution or artist situation for the right numbers. But the future definitely looks productive for me and my company, Dangerous Musick Ent., as a whole
