Buzzin interview with @PsalmOne

Tell us about you and your movement!

I don’t consider it a movement so much. I consider what I’m doing to be a way of life, or a sensibility. I am a complete lover of music and culture, and also anti-culture. My music displays a range of tastes, and that reflects my varied life. I am part chemist, student, rapper, teacher, traveler and an all-around nerd. The thread is in the millions of details. The details are what makes me. Anyone who can dig an educated girl with a million stories and a penchant for space cookies can be down”

When did you start to develop your artistry?

“I believe my art really started to develop at the end of high school. I had been writing a lot of bad poetry, but some pretty good raps, and by that time, I was keeping it all a big secret. I felt that if someone heard my bars and they didn’t like them, I would just DIE. But people ended up hearing them, and the word spread. All the good feedback and encouragement was definitely a catalyst. The art’s in me and as I grow, it grows as well. It is a natural progression that shows me I’m an artist at heart and I am always developing.”

Who are some of your musical influences?

“Fionna Apple and Stevie Wonder are two of my biggest musical influences. They both have the most simple, complex writing, and they have always managed to take me places with their music. As far as rap goes, I’ve always looked up to Black Thought, Snoop Dogg, Jean Grae and Jay-Z. I like pop music and I’m not afraid to admit it, so I get in a little Pet Shop Boys and Justin Bieber as well. But only in the smallest of doses for the latter”

What current projects are you working on?

“I’m currently finishing the follow-up to 2006’s “The Death of frequent Flyer” on Rhymesayers Entertainment. I am also working on projects with Casual of Hieroglyphics, DNAE Beats and I am planning to continue my “Woman at Work” series”

How are you planning to ‘Get Your Buzz Up’?

“My job is to keep killing these shows and putting out great music. Beyond that, I try to stay current and relative by reaching out to my fans, mostly via twitter, but we’ve done some cool promotions wit Above Ground magazine, and there is always something else cooking on the stove. Oh, yeah, I also plan on getting arrested this year, that always helps a rapper get buzz.

Just kidding about the getting arrested part!”
