Tell us about you and your movement.
Shit, man I go by a couple names. J Monday is the handle, but I go by The Capital Kid also because I’m from the capital of Pennsylvania. As far as the movement, man, I am my city but my following has been stretching heavily lately from Philadelphia to Arizona so by the time this interview is up who knows man. I’m just happy to have a following because some artists aren’t that fortunate. It ain’t broke so I definitely ain’t fixing nothing – you feel me!
When did you start to develop your artistry?
Man I always had a love for music since I was a young buck listening to my mom’s old records. I was a huge fan of jazz. I guess that’s what had me spittin’ music with no lyrics [laugh] but I remember being so into rap. Standing in front of the mirror rapping the lyrics to songs using anything I could find as a microphone. I started writing my own shit when my homie Waynehead got some DJ equipment. My folks couldn’t afford that so I had to be the rapper. Rap is about repetition, I would write so much because I wanted to be nice at it. I was so determined. I was like 11-years-old doing what nigga’s trying to do now. I can’t complain though, that made me a machine. I always been into sports also and if you think about it a rapper is sort of a mental athlete. Oh and free my homie Waynehead!
Who are some of your musical influences?
2pac of course Nas, Big, Jay – I really liked Big L a lot too. Scarface was also one of the first rappers I took a real liking to but truthfully I don’t know any of those dudes I just named, and I think a real influence is someone that is in your inner-circle. That would be my cousin YG. He was also a rapper. I respected his work ethic so much because he always had something new. He basically lived in the studio and rap is such a competitive art form that I would work around the clock just to keep up. He would always tell me, “You need more material,” and if that ain’t a influence I don’t know what is. It ain’t like Jay-Z or Nas was in my ear pushing me to create. My cuz died on high-speed chase with police but I know he sees me. R.I.P. Derrick Horne.
What current projects are you working on?
I just finished The Prequel Redux which is a re-release of my second mixtape, The Prequel. I’ve added 6 new tracks to it because my last mixtape The Sequel did so well I think my fans deserve to hear that body of music also and get caught up to date. At the time of its original release undergroundheads weren’t checking for me as much as they are now. Besides that I’m working on another mixtape which I don’t even have a name for yet. And I don’t want to throw one out there but I have a couple ideas brewing. The music so far is crazy!
How are you planning to ‘Get Your Buzz Up’?
Honestly, I really don’t plan too much on that type of stuff. With music it’s either you got it or you don’t. When it comes to a buzz too much planning only turns into a gimmick; the whole buzz thing is for the listeners and bloggers to decide but if I really have to answer that question I would say, staying busy within my craft. I feel my music speaks for itself. The only thing I have to do is keep coming with the underground hits because if you keep knocking on that door, sooner or later someone is going to open it and right now I think I’m banging on it. And if no one is home I’m a kick it in – ya dig [laughs].
