Exclusive Interview w/ Airplay DJ Challenge Winner DJ Fantom

Tell us about you and your movement

My Movement is me. DJ FANTOM. I am a Club/Party/mobile/show Dj from Queens Ny. I represent FANTOM PRODUCTIONS/F.P. ENTERTAINMENT. 16 years Behind the Turntables doing everything from big clubs to small Lounges, Clothing stores, Mobile gigs, Shows, colleges and everything in Between. I’ve been apart of a few different crews, from local to internationally known ones and now I Run my own situation. I am a 1 man Team building everything from the Ground up.

When did you start to develop your artistry?

At birth. Seriously though my mother (R.I.P.) would tell me that I used to scratch her records on her record player when I was a baby. I’ve always been into music since a young child. I always had some kind of record player and a great collection of records from my mother and uncles. I really got my first taste of the DJ life at age 13 with a local mobile DJ by the name of DJ Sparkle, from Brooklyn. She really taught me the art of mixing and programming a party. So yeah I’d say around age 13. At around 15 I got into turntablism and tricks and stuff… but I had the foundation of mixing and music selection since young.

Who are some of your musical influences?

Some of my influences are DJ Jazzy Jeff, Grand Master Roc Raida (R.I.P.) and the whole X men /X-ecutioners crew, and a whole slew of Turntablists from that era. On the Mixing and party rocking end I’d have to say DJ’s like Kid Capri, DJ Scratch, DJ Cocoa Chanelle, and Local DJ’s I came up under like DJ Sparkle, Rodney Williams aka Domewrecka, Doug Brown and DJ’s like Obah and scientific (now known as Elan Vytal) who introduced me to more eclectic styles of music and ways of DJ’ing

What current projects are you working on?

Right now I’m developing my online radio show Fantom Radio that I do through my site Fantomradio.com and looking for ways to expand it. Also several mix tapes to be released soon and collaborations with up coming artists like Moka Blast, who is being sought after by a lot of record labels right now. As well as nightclub and private gigs around NYC.

How are you planning to ‘Get Your Buzz Up’?

My Online Radio Show, Mix tapes, Online as well as street level promotion. Also looking to collaborate with artists and help build each others name through shows, mix tapes and album projects … to me the key is you have to have all your bases covered you have to be Industry and “In da streets” and a strong Internet presence is a must, as well as a strong Street presence And I plan to cover all of that

Shout out to my mentors coming up starting with DJ Sparkle and later on DJ Domewrecka and Doug Brown, and my dude DJ Feeka2000 who reminded me of the importance of performance and stage presence.
